Buzz stayed here on his great road trip 07.
    Seems Groovy.

    Big fan of the drinks.

This is the place to go if you need a typewriter in Madrid. The damn things are rarer than Diamonds— working ones even more so.

Note: That's not the name. I just have no clue what the name is.

Tiny store that sells herbs, great for making bitters and other herbals. They don't have a website or a catalog, so you best know what you want when you call. They ship.

Well known and pretty ok Coffee shop in Casco Viejo. There's internet. The area is really fucking pretty. No reason not to stop by.

  • 2 years, 4 months ago

Well Recommended place in the old town.

Every chef I've ever talked to about Spain has insisted I visit Muagritz. Some even threatened bodily harm if I did not.

I'm thinking about dropping by, seems like a cool place :-P

  • 2 years, 9 months ago

It just changed owners, and radically changed it's direction. I can't vouch for it being any good anymore.

Great local coffee shop, they roast their own coffee, pull great espresso and have great outside seating.

The baristas are all very international an easy to communicate with, which greatly aids one's ability to flirt with them.

The kind of bar that no matter how often you visit, there are a hundred more regular Regulars. the Red Dragon's Door is dead, The Mudpie is long gone: this is the last uptown townie bar with any sense of history. And by history, I mostly just mean piss, sweat and blood.

Last time I went there was 1.50 Jameson shots, the waitress left the bottle at our table. Or maybe Moe just blessed us that night.

Great Record store. Slightly pretentious, in the we still have a geocities website kind of way. But the music and the love for it is what's important, and they've got it in spades.

  • 2 years, 10 months ago

Supposedly a place where you can get all kinds of magic stuff. Notably human body parts, fresh or dried. Also, Penis protection juju, which will prevent your genitals from being stolen or magic'd away.

  • 2 years, 10 months ago

On of my least favorite Stumptowns.

  • 2 years, 11 months ago

Buzz is right, when the WWDC crowd is there it loses much of it's charm.

That said, thursday nights are still great.

  • 2 years, 11 months ago

    Boring, flat out.

  • 2 years, 11 months ago

Went here on my second day in Sarajevo. It's dark and underground. I spent the time chatting up a practically married local, with a square sort of attitude but an appreciation for classic punk.

That seems to be the usual sort of happening here.

    (2 mark pivo here :) )

Like nearly every cafe in the balkans, there is no coffee here, just espresso. No big deal, they pulls shots like old pros, no burnt dreck here.

Usually it's packed with the Yuppie crowd, but the back room is chill, a great place to take a beautiful Belorussian girl to talk about global race politick.

  • 2 years, 11 months ago

Dive bar, but damn fun, good music nice ambiance. Open late ish.

    Townie bar.

Went there when MASH was closed, proceeded to slobber on cute Bosnian girl, despite myself.

  • 2 years, 11 months ago

Oh right, It's down an alley to the north of a guy selling bags, and a skate board shop.

  • 2 years, 11 months ago

Extensive Rakya menu, caters to international type people so there is a diverse crowd and well, the food is top.

It was the first place I ate when I got to Sarajevo. There is nothing better than a 10am Honey Brandy shot.

Fantastic bar. I like it best when it's not WWDC. Thursday nights, the place is empty you can bring you friends and play cards. It's double alley address makes sure no one will harsh your vibe.

This is possibly my favorite not hoity toity cocktail bar (which I love with much fervor) in the entire bay area.

The Chieftain is a great WWDC bar, it's stumbling distance from Moscone and the assorted hotels near by. I've been a few times, but frankly I never want to stay for too long, as there is a better option pretty damn, close, or at least something more along my interest lines.

Simple place. Breakfast of fruits and bread. super cheap. Located in one of the two livley parts of San Jose. Comfy beds actually they could be rock hard, I wouldn't notice I'm exhausted.

Fuck writing the rest of this. here it is. this better freaking geocode.

Julio, the bartender, invented the Modern Margarita. If you've ever heard of agave syrup or nectar it's because of his hard work.

Famous the world over, Julio, and Tommy's is the best for tequila on the planet.

No one will ever say The Otter (as it's called by anyone too embarrassed to say the full name) is a classy joint. In fact it's down right foul. They serve all drinks in plastic cups, not even good plastic cups.

But it's full of townies there with one mission, to get their drunk on (or more likely to perpetuate it, since their nice whiskey is Segrams 7). The Karaoke that happens every night of the week is the most fun in town, with out a doubt.

I visited only once, but I've been again many ...

I visited only once, but I've been again many times in my day dreams. It's just one of those bars.

This coffee shop was first brought to my attention in 2007, a year before I had ever set foot in Minneapolis. Mitch Clem, the author, inker, neglecter, of Nothing Nice to Say, use it in the background of a comic about bike races.

A year later, my best friend and I road tripped to his new apartment, a mere block away from it. My first morning in Minneapolis was spent eating their veggie chili and sipping their not Stumptown good, but still totally excellent coffee, watching the bikers hustle in the snow.

Located just north of Downtown Tempe, it's like moving from urban to bum fuck no where. Or it would be if you weren't surrounded on all sides by urban sprawl for 50 miles in every direction.

That said, it's one of my favorite quick getaway. I really enjoy hiking one of the less popular peaks and having spring time picnics.

Stay away on the weekends and friday afternoon though, it's crowded with kids and parents and teachers and such; they kill the magic.

I caught sight of this wandering in Seattle in early 2007. It's really just a big hippie fellow hanging out under the Aurora bridge.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

The Last of Tempe's first generation of independent coffee shops.

It's attached to the best frame shop in the state. The owner of both, Robin is often seen fluttering about, 'moming' the regular patrons.

The food is inconsistent, the coffee's awful, but people keep coming back. Lord knows it got me through my undergrad (or contributed to it taking me 6 years...).

Here's to another 10 years, and 10 years after that.

When I arrived in Portland, it was drizzling, I didn't have anyone's phone number and I had just been taken for all my cash by my cabbie.

I was feeling pretty grim with my luggage and too many messenger bags falling all about. I dragged myself to the Fresh Pot and used their internet to get ahold of some friendly people.

They've got a dirty french press cup that tastes pretty damn good. It's Pat's favorite coffee shop so I visited a whole bunch in the short time I worked for Pat. I was never disappointed.

Assumably named after the Fritz Lang movie, this was my go to coffee shop when I was working at Buy Olympia. I'd try to get in as early as possible to get the heels of the freshly baked banana or zucchini bread. It was fantastic stuff!

If I didn't get their early enough they have been purchased by some principal at a local elementary. I hated that principal.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

Awesome place, not really open to the public yet (though I hear they are sort of kinda eventually opening a retail space in front). They sell super cute shit on the internet.

They used to live in Olympia, but like all things Olympia, they moved to Portland. Owners Aaron and Pat are the best kinds of people. Ask them about the Mountain Goats.

RNC protest of 2008. Tear gas, pepper spray, dirt and grime soaked into my shirt. My trousers had been ripped and my belt had been taken by the police. I was a mess, sartorially and mentally.

Walked into Heimie's, They offered me a shave, a new shirt, trousers, a vest and belt with a smile and a song (literally). I felt like a new man.

This was the day after the black bloc I had been covering smashed one of their big glass windows. Super classy gentlemen run this place. I'm proud to have patronized it.

Owner sits interested people down and demonstrates his ridiculous siphon pot. It's decent coffee.

The second time I went the owner even let me stir my own.

Went looking for an idol of mine. Saw his red sports car out front. He was nowhere to be found inside, but I did get a really bad iced coffee.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

4am, over indulged in alcohol at a terrible bar up the street. Came to Beth's had a 12 egg veggie omelet with a pizza plate full of hash browns. Delicious.

This is a tiny little resort hotel in a sleepy offshoot of a sleepy town on the pacific side of Panama. Excellent bar and coffee, amazing (consistent 8 foot) swells just a stones throw away.

This is pretty close to paradise.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

I pulled into this crazy all night diner after being the most lost person in the whole state for a good hour. It was around 3am, I had no idea where I was but I knew I wanted to get some grits before I continued driving north any more.

The people were all smoking, playing keno and giving me the hairy eyeball. Did I mention the big ol' Rebel flag behind the cash register?

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

The food is actually not very good and the beer is only ok. But the people that come, oh my, they are top notch.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

My favorite of the ever many Stumptown locations. Actually that's not technically true, I like sitting along the big red wall in the spring. Otherwise I opt to go to the Annex, just a few feet down, it's quieter and usually has more room.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

Portland's answer to MLPS' Hard Times. But not quite as cool or comfortable. It's a good place to go to spend time being glad you have a job. Beer is usually damn good, the coffee is from Chiapas, and the workers/owners come in angry and feisty.

When there is no soccer to be watched, the TV's hide behind some horrible paintings. Good neighborhood bar, better than many even.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

Overwhelmingly expensive (16 Euro martini), but also the one of the only places to get a decent martini in the whole city. When I went, they were playing Rocky Horror Picture Show sans Sound. That was pretty cool. Lots of douches though.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

This place is pretty fucking cool. It's one part anarchist, nine parts crusty, and four parts delicious. Bring cash, and try not to bother people.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

Took a date here once. I was preposterously happy with the cocktails. My date told me she was married during dinner.

  • 3 years, 1 month ago

This is the best place in town to gain a shit load of weight. Pasties hail from Cornwall and their really depressing mines. Usually, they taste like ass. The pasties here though are amazing; in fact, they may be the best pasties in the world.

This place also has the best Guinness in Tempe, no idea why.
